Synopsis

A substance is trickling out of a hole in the wall of a hospital waiting room. As our characters attempt to block the hole, a strange and formidable force is unleashed.

POD was devised during Shelly’s time as Associate Artist at The Place, the UK’s premier centre for contemporary dance. POD is the second in Shelly’s ‘Backwards Series’.

To devise the film Shelly engaged with her performers in a playful physical process utilising the properties of bin bags and a handy roll of latex.
An outlandish approach, were choreography, narrative and latex sculptures are explored with surprising results.

The setting is a hospital waiting room that appears to exist on its own, like a floating pod in which paranoia and fear exist. The hole represents the unknown.
As the piece suggests, if we do not face the unknown our fears will only come back to haunt us. The absurd nature of the characters and situation reflect the absurd nature of our existence.

Made with support from Arts Council England, POD was broadcast on CH4 and screens internationally at film, dance film and arts festivals.
