A video portrait featuring Mariam, a poet.

At the age of 7 Mariam’s eyesight started to deteriorate, a year later she was sent to Germany for an operation to recover her eye-sight, which failed. Experiencing such difficulties in her early life motivated Mariam to enter into community service and to help others.  Mariam holds a deep belief in the rights of the blind within society to show their capabilities and their hidden potentials. She is the chief programme coordinator of The Social and Cultural Centre for The Blind where she runs an intiative ‘If you want to know me, listen to me’ which tackles physiological, academic and practical issues and encourages the community around the blind to help.
